What is the next generation of EHR

With the rise of biotechnologies like DNA and protein sequencing, personal health data could be explosive in next decade. The trend inevitably puts forward two questions:

  1. How to organically present EHR data?
  2. How to share data across different locations in real-time?
Background Research

Content

A vital part of health information technology containing a patient’s medical history, lab results, allergies, billing data etc.

Significance

Allows clinicians to make decisions about a patient’s care, also automate and streamline clinician workflow.

Status

More that 90% US hospitals have EHR system, future direction includes: natural language processing, machine learning, genomic & other "-omic" information and embedded data analytic module.

Conceptualize future
EHR system

A scenario I sketched out is how a clinician pulls a patient's health data from EHR system. The steps should include:

  • Identify patient's identity;
  • Display patient's health data in a 3D format;
  • Voice control to command the data to be pulled;
  • View 3D formatted data with hologlass.

Solutions (highlights)

01.
HoloTable Prototype

A U-shape minimal style table.
After EHR system is activated, four floating circular signals show up representing four categories of patient's health records.

02.
User Profile Prototype

Patient's health records are pulled from the system and displayed in a 3D format on the holotable. Waved signal means voice command input (bottom).
All the information can only be viewed by clinicians with hologlasses.

03.
Physical Data Prototype

How patient's physical data looks like on the hologlass screen.
Examples listed here are pulse rate (top) and protein structure (bottom).

04.
Biological systems Prototype

Based on human biological systems, EHR data are divided into four main categories and mapped onto a virtual human body, containing thermal, skeletal, muscle and nervous map.
Examples here are thermal map (top) and nervous map (bottom).

05.
"-omic" data Prototype

Structural and atomic level data under each main category can be pulled by voice command.
Top video shows how data showup on the hologlass screen, each light strip surrounding virtual body represents a dataset of this selected category; Bottom shows how each dataset looks like.

Wrap-up

Digitization promised to make medical care easier and more effcient. However, current EHR system seems to become the screen between doctors and patients.
In this project, I brainstormed how technologies can revolutionize EHR system in terms of achieving high efficiency of using, displaying as well as securing tremendous health data records.
