Inputs from students

I interviewed 5 RIT students regarding current school's facility reporting system, three problems I found are:

  • Familiarity: student don't know where to report facility issues.
  • Complexity: current online reporting form is time-consuming and not user-friendly;
  • Reliability: students prefer to contact with people instead of submitting online forms.

Students can manually describe problems and system can format descriptions into classified job types.

Design for motivation

Encourage students to use this reporting system from three aspects:

  • Promote: set multiple download points; host on other widely-used campus app; flyers and posters; rewards for reporting;
  • Simplify: clean interface; less client-side input; automatic content filling;
  • Connect: quick feedback; real-time updates; information safety; progress status checking.

Iterations on visual

I improved visual aesthetics through:

  • Creating a new logo design;
  • Changing header color to black to separate it with page content;
  • Removing unneccessary page titles;
  • Revising unambiguous work order icon.

Solution (interaction demo)

01.
Barcode Scan

Highlight: Scan barcode on the equipment to directly skip the step of filling in the detail information such as location, model number etc.

02.
Submission form

Highlight: Choose to fill out the submission form when there is no barcode can be found. After successfully submitting the order, user can track status under job status page.

03.
Job Status Track

Highlight: Two modes can be chosen to show the ongoing jobs in the campus or submitted by user own. Search, filter and star options are available to customize the results.

04.
Message Center

Highlight: Two sections under this page: notification and message. Under notification section, user can get updates on job status and rate the experience; Message section is used for contacting job managers.

Wrap-up

Two things could be improved in this project:

  • More data should be collected during each phase, such as conducting usability testing to validate the workflow I designed.
  • Designing the interface for managers, for instance how managers sort & assign submitted job or how they contact reporters if any questions or updates occur.
